Civil rights leader Jesse Jackson campaigned for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1984 and 1988. A gifted orator, Jackson electrified delegates at the 1988 Democratic National Convention with this speech. Long after Jackson left the speaker’s podium, the crowd continued to chant “Keep Hope Alive,” echoing a refrain Jackson used in his address.
