Seventeenth-century English composer Henry Purcell is best known for the dramatic opera Dido and Aeneas (about 1689). Choruses, which are freely interworked with solos throughout, are a crucial part of the work. This excerpt from the “Witches Chorus” is an example of the power and dramatic tension that Purcell’s choruses provide.
