China’s Domestic Order

China’s Domestic Order
This 17th-century painting shows a Song dynasty bureaucrat presiding over a civil service examination. During the Song and throughout later centuries, China’s political structure and the resulting domestic order depended upon local elites to serve as non-governmental bureaucrats who managed institutions and helped fund public works.
