This map of the world, based on descriptions and coordinates given in Ptolemy’s Geographia, was published in 1486, around the time the Portuguese first opened trade routes that spanned the globe. The resulting world market meant profound changes for many nations, including Asia, where global trade gave rise to three great land empires over as many centuries and forever altered the character of the continent.
