This 6th-century mosaic from Jarash, Jordan, depicts the city of Alexandria in Egypt. Founded in 332 BC by Macedonian king Alexander the Great, Alexandria became a cultural, religious, and economic center of the Greek world, effecting the spread of Greek culture during the Hellenistic Age (4th-1st century BC).
