American poet Robert Lowell’s confessional verse revealed his inner torments and spoke to readers on a deeply personal level. Here Lowell reads an excerpt from his 1959 poem “Skunk Hour.” The poem describes a sleepless hour during the night when Lowell’s only companions are his own fears and the skunks that wander the streets of his town.
