Virgin Lands Program
A harvester harvests wheat in the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic (SSR; now Kazakhstan) in about 1954. In the Virgin Lands program of the 1950s, the government of the USSR plowed up about 36 million hectares (about 90 million acres) of uncultivated, or “virgin,” land in the Kazakh SSR and parts of Russia and cultivated it with grain.
