Most people who live in the Canadian province of Québec are descendants of 17th and 18th century French colonists, and form a distinct culture within Canada. Since the 1960s some political leaders in the province have sought greater independence for Québec. In 1995 the province’s citizens voted on a referendum to secede from Canada. The proposal was defeated by a margin of less than 1 percent.
