| The Roanoke Colony was the first English settlement in America. In 1587 more than 100 colonists settled on Roanoke Island, along the coast of what is now North Carolina. Colony leader John White went back to England for supplies but was unable to return to the colony until 1590. When he returned, he found the colonists gone and the word “Croatoan” carved into a post (this depiction shows the word carved into a tree). The fate of the colonists remains a mystery to this day. |
