| In 1962 the United States discovered that the Soviet Union was building launch sites for nuclear missiles in Cuba. Reconnaissance airplanes directed by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) photographed the missile sites under construction. This photographic evidence convinced President John F. Kennedy to confront the Soviet threat, initiating the Cuban Missile Crisis. | ||||||
