Imperial troops fired on peaceful demonstrators in Saint Petersburg in January 1905. Rage over "Bloody Sunday" spread across Russia, developing into a revolution. Emperor Nicholas II was forced to allow the creation of a legislative assembly and to grant citizens important civil rights.
