African American mezzo-soprano Shirley Verrett is heard here in an excerpt from the celebrated aria “Che faro senza Euridice?” (“What will I do without Eurydice?”) from act III of Orfeo ed Euridice, an opera by German composer Christoph Willibald Gluck. The opera had its premiere in Vienna in 1762.
