Gulf of Tonkin, Vietnam
Located in the South China Sea, the Gulf of Tonkin lies between Vietnam and China and has been a major shipping and trading hub for centuries. The Red River empties into the gulf, creating a fertile delta at the Vietnamese seaport of Haiphong. A 1964 naval battle in the Gulf of Tonkin between the United States and North Vietnam escalated the Vietnam War.
