| French playwright Pierre Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais satirized the French nobility in his most famous works, the comedies The Barber of Seville (1775) and The Marriage of Figaro (1784), which provided inspiration for popular operas by Rossini and Mozart. Beaumarchais’s plays reflected his antinobility views; he also sold arms to the American colonies during the American Revolution. Pictured here is an actor playing the part of Figaro. |
