The Fram

The Fram
The Fram was the first ship designed to withstand polar pack ice. The ship was designed and built by Norwegian explorer Fridtjof Nansen, shown here standing in the lifeboat. The ship’s captain, Otto Sverdrup, is shown standing at the ship’s edge. In 1893 they launched the Fram on its maiden voyage to the Arctic, where it drifted in ice floes for 35 months, finally reaching open water unscathed. The Fram was later used by Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen during his famous 1910-1912 expedition to the South Pole.
