From his studies of animals on the Galápagos Islands, Darwin drew many conclusions about the characteristics of animals and how they are inherited. He wrote his observations in the Narrative of the Surveying Voyages of HMS Adventure and Beagle between 1826 and 1836, and his words are brought to life in the recording heard here. Darwin noted that the fear of human beings by most wild birds was noticeably absent from the birds of the Galápagos Islands. As human beings had only recently reached the islands, Darwin concluded that it took several generations for the instinct to fear humans to develop in the bird population.
