Hilliard’s Young Man Among Roses

Hilliard’s Young Man Among Roses
This 16th-century miniature by English artist Nicholas Hilliard shows the Elizabethan ideal of the courtly gentleman, dressed in ruff, doublet, and hose. This foppish young gentleman demonstrates the masculine fashion for jewelry and adornment during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, but the style could be found in most countries of 16th-century Europe. The miniature is in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
