Contact Process

Contact Process
One method of making sulfuric acid is called the contact process. It begins with the heating of sulfur or sulfur ore to form sulfur dioxide. Heating the sulfur dioxide with a catalyst, such as vanadium (V) oxide, turns it into sulfur trioxide. The sulfur trioxide is dissolved in a concentrated sulfuric acid solution to form a substance called oleum. Diluting the oleum with water causes the sulfur trioxide to combine with the added water and form sulfuric acid.
