| One method of making sulfuric acid is called the contact process. It begins with the heating of sulfur or sulfur ore to form sulfur dioxide. Heating the sulfur dioxide with a catalyst, such as vanadium (V) oxide, turns it into sulfur trioxide. The sulfur trioxide is dissolved in a concentrated sulfuric acid solution to form a substance called oleum. Diluting the oleum with water causes the sulfur trioxide to combine with the added water and form sulfuric acid. |
