Driving the Last Spike

Driving the Last Spike
The Canadian Pacific Railway was the first rail line to link Canada’s Atlantic coast with its Pacific coast. Donald Smith, one of the railroad's chief financial backers, drove the last spike in a ceremony at Eagle Pass, British Columbia, on November 7, 1885. Construction of the line fulfilled a promise to the province of British Columbia, which had joined the Dominion of Canada on condition that it be linked to the eastern provinces by rail.
