Hysterectomy

Hysterectomy
Hysterectomy is the surgical removal of the uterus. Two methods are used: abdominal hysterectomy through an incision, shown here, or vaginal hysterectomy through the vagina. In abdominal hysterectomy, the surgeon opens the abdominal cavity, cuts through the fallopian tubes, and severs the uterus at its junction with the cervix. If the fallopian tubes and ovaries are healthy, they are usually left in place, but if they have become diseased they are also removed.
