| The Nazca Lines in the desert of southern Peru are one of the great mysteries of pre-Columbian archaeology. This depiction of a killer whale is one of many huge drawings of animals and geometric shapes, some hundred of meters across. These drawings, created by sweeping aside the desert soil and stones to reveal lighter soil underneath, can only be fully appreciated when viewed from the air. They remained undiscovered until airplanes began to fly over the area in the early 20th century. | ||||||
