Abū Simbel Face Lift
The construction of the Aswān High Dam on the Nile in the 1960s created Lake Nasser in southern Egypt. The rising waters would have covered the ancient temples of Abū Simbel if not for an international engineering project between 1964 and 1968. The team cut apart the temples, including the massive statues of Ramses II shown here, and reassembled them high above the river.
