| Wanted Poster, No. 1 (1969) by American artist Charles White is one of a series of works by White that are based on posters from the era of the Civil War (1861-1865). The posters advertise slave auctions and rewards for the return of runaway slaves. White has substituted portraits of contemporary African Americans in place of the original images to increase the haunting effect of the work. Wanted Poster, No. 1 belongs to the estate of Charles White. | ||||||
