In addition to his important technical achievements as a bass player, American musician Charles Mingus was one of the most influential jazz composers of the 1950s and 1960s. Experimenting with dissonant harmonies and group improvisations, Mingus closely joined jazz improvisation to structured composition. This example, “So Long Eric,” is taken from a 1962 concert at Town Hall in New York City.
