Austrian-born composer and organist Anton Bruckner was one of the most important symphonic composers of the late 19th century. Inspired by the immense proportions of German composer Ludwig van Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony and the new orchestral methods of the romantic composer Richard Wagner, Bruckner achieved a remarkable, individual expression in his panoramic symphonies. Widely criticized by his contemporaries as an imitator of Wagner, Bruckner is now often likened to German composer Johannes Brahms for his balance of romanticism and classicism.
