On September 8, 1974, United States President Gerald Ford (1974-1977) pardoned former President Richard Nixon (1969-1974), who had resigned earlier that year while facing impeachment proceedings for illegal activities involving members of his staff. Ford became vice president when his predecessor, Spiro T. Agnew, resigned under indictment. Ford became president when Nixon left office.
