Occupation of Alcatraz

Occupation of Alcatraz
From 1969 to 1971 Native American activists occupied Alcatraz Island in San Francisco Bay, the site of an abandoned federal prison. A coalition of Native American groups, including the American Indian Movement, laid claim to the island according to the terms of an 1868 treaty that gave Native Americans ownership of “unoccupied government land.” The Alcatraz occupation was a pivotal event in the 20th century struggle for Native American rights.
