The culmination of German composer Johann Sebastian Bach’s sacred works came with his oratorio St. Matthew Passion, first performed in 1724 in Leipzig. The piece was written for double chorus, soloists, and orchestra and is narrated in tenor solo recitative and choruses. This excerpt from the passage “Wahrlich, dieser ist Gottes Sohn gewesen” (Truly This Was the Son of God) is from one of the most beautiful choral segments in the oratorio.
