Johannesburg was founded in 1886 as a mining town in a region of South Africa that had vast, newly discovered gold deposits. The town grew rapidly into a city, fed by production from the mines. Today Johannesburg lies at the center of the most populated region of South Africa. The cosmopolitan Hillbrow section of the city contains many structures built since the 1950s, including the J. G. Strijdom (or Hillbrow) Tower, center.
