A lifetime of amateur figure skating climaxed for Kristi Yamaguchi in 1992 when she won the United States and world championships, as well as the Olympic gold medal in Albertville, France. Yamaguchi began skating as a child, overcoming club feet to become a youth champion in both singles and pairs figure skating. Yamaguchi turned professional after her amateur successes in 1992.
