| Giant pandas were once believed to be more closely related to raccoons than bears, but molecular analysis conducted in the mid-1980s suggests that giant pandas are more appropriately grouped with the true bears. Giant pandas are found in the higher elevations of western China and the Tibetan Himalayas, where bamboo, the staple of their diet, is prolific.
