Ernie Banks played 19 seasons of professional baseball with the Chicago Cubs (1953-1971), and he is closely identified with that team. As the Cubs’ shortstop and then first baseman, he set records for his outstanding fielding and power hitting. Banks was the Cubs’ first black baseball player, and his enthusiasm for the game and his professional demeanor earned him the respect and admiration of players and fans. He is credited with the phrase “It’s a great day for a ballgame. Let’s play two,” a testimony to his love of baseball and willingness to play two games when only one was scheduled.
