Knoxville, Tennessee
The city of Knoxville, on the Tennessee River in eastern Tennessee, developed as a supply point for westward travel in the late 18th century. It was the state’s first capital and has become a commercial, shipping, and cultural center. The city houses the headquarters for the Tennessee Valley Authority, a federal organization designed to research, establish, and control irrigation and power production on the Tennessee River and its tributaries.
