Rugged Wichita Mountains
The rugged Wichita Mountains in southwestern Oklahoma include numerous granite outcroppings. Forests of scrub oak growing on the flanks of the mountains provide a rich habitat for wildlife, including birds such as the endangered black-capped vireo. Much of the mountains lie within the boundaries of the Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge or Fort Sill, operated by the United States Army.
