Allegheny Mountains, Maryland
Northwestern Maryland is characterized by the rolling hills and broad valleys of the Allegheny Mountains. The range is an extension of the Appalachian mountain system, rising west of the Blue Ridge in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia. The Alleghenies contain rich timber and mineral reserves that form the basis for several industries, the most profitable being the coal industry.
