The bassoon is one of the deepest-sounding members of the family of musical instruments known as double reeds. It is made of wood and metal and is most commonly heard providing the bass harmony in orchestral settings. The bassoon stands approximately 134 cm (about 4 ft) tall and is made of two separate parallel tubes joined at the bottom by a U-tube. The total bore length (the path the air travels through) of a bassoon is about 2.4 m (about 8 ft).
