Grateful Dead
The free-flowing, mellow rock stylings of the Grateful Dead, (from left to right) Phil Lesh, Bill Kreutzmann, Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, and Ron “Pigpen” McKernan, typified the social and musical scene in San Francisco in the 1960s. The band’s well-known live concerts came to represent the laid-back lifestyle of the era and inspired a loyal following of fans who became known as “Deadheads.” Despite a variety of personnel changes, the core group continued to tour heavily through several decades, finally disbanding when Garcia died in 1995.
