One of the most versatile and widely successful songwriters in American music history, popular composer Irving Berlin published more than 1500 songs in his 70-year career. His enormous popularity rested on his simple and instantly recognizable melodies. Berlin wrote most of his songs for Broadway musicals and motion pictures. “Alexander’s Ragtime Band” was one of Berlin’s first hits and was also the title of the 1938 musical (and later film) in which it appeared.
