Benazir Bhutto
In 1988 Benazir Bhutto of Pakistan became the first woman to be elected prime minister of an Islamic country. The daughter of former Pakistani prime minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, she was dismissed two years later on charges that her administration was corrupt and incompetent. Although she was reelected in 1993, she was dismissed for a second time on similar charges in 1996.
