Originally from Africa and Central America, the marimba is a kind of xylophone, a set of tuned wooden bars that is played with sticks or mallets. The marimba is considered the national instrument of Guatemala. Guatemalan marimbas are distinguished by their carved wood resonators. In this example, the marimba is heard along with rattles played by dancers.
