| In 1991 the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics voted itself out of existence. Before this, reformers were put in charge of the Communist Party and many reforms had been introduced. Here, two Soviet soldiers carried a bust of Vladimir Illich Lenin out of their military-school Communist-party room on August 24, 1991. It was Lenin who first advocated the need for a Communist party and tight party discipline to overthrow the corrupt imperial rulers of what had been Russia. |
