Upon reaching a critical size and metabolism, bacteria and other cells divide to form two identical daughter cells which, approximately half of the original cell’s mass, themselves begin to grow. A bacterium may divide as often as every six minutes, very quickly forming a colony such as the one shown here that is visible to the human eye.
