This chart shows how the $3 trillion in United States federal government spending was divided in fiscal year 2008. The five largest categories—social security, defense, income security, Medicare, and health—accounted for three-quarters of the budget. Income security includes federal pensions and unemployment, while health consists of health care, research and training, and consumer and occupational health and safety.
