Georgia politician Jimmy Carter easily won the United States presidential nomination at the 1976 Democratic National Convention. With Senator Walter Mondale as his running mate he narrowly won the general election against Republican Gerald Ford the same year. Carter became the 39th president of the United States and served from 1977 to 1981.
