Though the indigenous, Native American peoples located in the Andean region of Argentina no longer speak their original languages, they have maintained some of their ancestral culture. Musically, distinctive pre-Columbian features are found in the singing, which is limited to two to four notes, and an undulating “head voice” that is elegantly ornamented. In this example the singer is accompanied by a caja (small hand drum) playing an ancient rhythm of alternating strokes.
