| North Carolina’s eastern border is a 484-km (301-mi) stretch of Atlantic coast. Cape Hatteras, with its beautiful dunes and expanses of beach, forms part of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore on the Outer Banks. The Cape Hatteras lighthouse was built in 1870 and stands 63 m (208 ft) high. In 1999, to protect it from coastal erosion, the lighthouse was shifted about 900 m (2900 ft) from the position shown here. |
