By 1885, the date of this lithograph, New York City was a major center of manufacturing, banking, and commerce. The city’s natural deepwater harbor and the completion of the Erie Canal in 1825 together made it the most important shipping and trading gateway to the United States. Financial institutions, including banks and investment companies, set up their headquarters in the city during the early 1800s.
