One of the best-known Cuban percussionists in modern jazz, Mongo Santamaria arrived on the jazz scene at a time when it was opening up to new ideas and influences. The introduction of Afro-Cuban rhythms helped to fuse the Latin influence back into jazz after the initial enthusiasm for Desi Arnaz and Cuban big bands. Santamaria’s instruments—congas, bongos, sticks, and other percussion instruments—allowed for a more authentic Cuban sound.
