The soul sound created by Booker T. and the MG’s, as well as other Memphis artists recording at the local Stax/Volt Records label in the early 1960s, was instantly recognizable. In contrast to the smoothly melodic and formularized Motown Records sound (made popular by label artists the Supremes, Stevie Wonder, and Smokey Robinson), the Booker T./Stax sound had an infectious rough edge and bouncy groove that revealed stronger ties to early rhythm and blues. As an instrumental group, Booker T. and the MG’s had one of the tightest and liveliest rhythm sections in popular music.
