Tragic Prelude

Tragic Prelude
American artist John Steuart Curry (1897-1946) painted this mural, Tragic Prelude, which is located in the State Capitol Building in Topeka, Kansas. An allegorical painting, the mural depicts abolitionist John Brown during the “Bleeding Kansas” decade of the 1850s. During that decade, Kansas was the site of violent clashes between antislavery and proslavery groups.
